Wheels are everywhere in the machines we build, and completely absent from every creature that has ever lived.

This is the story of why.

It begins in the Namib with the golden wheel spider, which throws itself sideways and rolls down a dune to escape a parasitic wasp. It is the nearest thing biology has produced, and it still does not count.

Rolling a whole body is one thing. An axle is something else, and in roughly 4 billion years nothing our size has grown one.

The obstacle is plumbing.

Nerves and blood vessels cannot cross a joint that turns forever, so a living wheel would have to be cut loose from the body feeding it. That leaves it dead, unable to heal or grow.

Owls needed widened arterial canals and pooled blood reserves just to survive rotating their heads 270 degrees, and that is not even a full turn.

Then the video turns over, because biology did build a wheel.

Bacteria swim using a propeller on a genuine rotating axle, turning hundreds of times every second and able to slam into reverse. Your own cells are packed with rotary machinery doing much the same as you read this. So the question was never whether life can make a wheel. It is why life stops at a scale you need a microscope to see, and that runs through diffusion, distance, and why anything larger than a bacterium needs a heart.

From there it opens out. Why a wheel does only half the work and the ground does the rest. Why Earth had no surface worth rolling on until people built one. And why evolution climbs any slope but cannot cross a valley.
