This one mosquito found its way into a room full of people, and it only wanted one of them. You.

It was never random, and it was never about sweet blood. Something on your skin gave the order.

This is a look at what actually makes a mosquito choose one human over another, and why the target is almost always the same person. The trail runs from the carbon dioxide in your breath, to the infrared glow of your body heat, to a layer of oil on your skin that a colony of bacteria quietly feeds on.

Leslie Vosshall's lab at Rockefeller University ran 64 people through an odor tournament and found one volunteer, known only as Subject 33, who pulled a hundred times more mosquitoes than the weakest competitor. A team at UC Santa Barbara caught the insect reading pure infrared. In the Netherlands, researchers traced the whole thing down to the bacteria on your skin, the same reason a Dutch scientist once watched malaria mosquitoes swarm a block of Limburger cheese.

Along the way it lands on the fact that this tiny insect, drawn to you in particular, kills more people every year than every predator on Earth combined.
