I mean Lego Friends IS a wildly popular theme. It might be lego's longest running original theme and I have heard in multiple industry interviews that it steadily sells gangbusters!
Indeed, very true. I just can't help but actually turned this into a modular building for my city!
On the contrary, my daughter loves lego friends mini dolls, and despises regular lego minifigs. So they do right product for their target audience.
We do need to keep in mind why we got Minidolls. They were specifically made to appeal to girls more, it worked, and it is still working today. But at the end of the day it is just a matter of preference.
I like the Friends theme because it's a true theme, not an IP. That allows for much more creative freedom when designing sets because the set creators don't have to make it look canon.
As a former employee I’m sure you know why. The minifigs dont resonate and aren’t popular with certain demographics, the minidolls are. If anyone (esp and adult) doesn’t buy a great set because of the minidolls they are just missing out and it’s their loss. But if it wasn’t popular and the market research didn’t tell them to keep them, they wouldn’t. Minifig lovers have tons of options and even custom options. The only complaint might be the torsos sometimes have better designs for minidolls (like the doctor)
Very true, and prices are much better for that theme
But Lego Friends IS really popular. If you don’t like the mini dolls, fair enough – just use it with your minifigs. But the point is that lots of people who don’t like minifigs do like minidolls. It’s win win really. Great sets that wouldn’t exist without the theme, and anyone who doesn’t like the dolls can just sell or gift them and use the set with their own figs of preference. My only real criticism of Lego Friends sets is that they need to include more male minidolls in there and be a bit more inclusive.
