One day, an American tourist woman complained that my English was far too basic. I politely apologized and explained that, unfortunately, I only speak German, French, Swiss German, and Alsatian. Then I asked her how many languages she spoke. I think she took it personally, because she turned around and walked away without another word. 😄

I am Dutch, living in Spain, and had an American tourist ask me the other day 'Why don't they speak English here?". So I said 'because we're not in England'. Complete silence, while I continued my conversations with my friends at the table in Spanish, Dutch, English, German and French. Learning languages opens the world to you, and stops your narrow mind thinking that the world revolves around you.
