I'm Danish and here we do the same as in Germany - when ot comes to parties, we greet either everybody or say "hi" to the room... we don't find it rude, when we don't say something entering the waitingroom! We do "lufte ud" and so on... We love to stick to private silence, riding the bus...
Funny, Im half Polish half Spanish and most of them are known to me. Yep, I have my window open right now here in Warsaw and in Spain it would be creepy if you cross someone hiking or someone enters a room in complete silence......ugh! just unacceptable XD But one thing that is very different here and there are the ways of leaving a place. In Spain leaving is a process, you say you´ll leave, you drink a last one, you chat a bit, you kiss everyone goodbye and, one hour later, you leave. Here in Poland you can just reduce it all to say thanks and standing up all at once
It's true that German greet when entering public (waiting) rooms. However, the actual greeting usually consists of a short grunting noise that might resemble a "Guten Morgen" that foreigners will confuse with someone clearing a throat. The typical response is an even more difficult to understand grunting noise. If you come in with a cheery "GUTEN MORGEN!!" you might be an American.
saying "Moin" on the beach, when walking the dog is little bit too much, but when in Rome...
