I have always considered "thank you" to be the one most important expressions to learn in any language of a country you are going to visit, bar none. I can probably say "thank you" in more languages than I can anything else. I can totally relate to Deana's considerations about toilets (I mean, we are humans, and humans need toilets), but instead of asking where they are, I'd prefer to ask if there are any. Usually (always), if there are any, people will point you to them rather than just answer your question in the affirmative. I just find it more polite, depending on where you are of course. In a restaurant, especially a more upscale one, I would expect that there are toilets, so I would ask where they are (it would be silly to ask if they are any). But in a random tourist attraction, or a railway station, or something similar, I would rather ask if they are toilets rather than where the toilets are.

8:45 For Non-Germans watching here: If you should ever come to Germany, don't lose your temper, and especially don't yell at people. In a professional setting it is seen as highly unprofessional, and at any other setting it is seen as simply asshole behaviour. In some situations you might get away with it, because people want to get you as soon as possible of their backs, want to avoid a scandal, or are simply conflict-shy, but nobody respects you for it and you might run into a lot of passive resistance and mockery, and if you get filmed while yelling you might even end up as a German meme. There are 2 sayings I know of the top of my head: "Wer schreit lügt", "Who yells lies" and "Wer schreit hat unrecht", "Who yells is in the wrong", in many circles yelling is even seen as a form of violence. In arguments there's even an accepted strategy to provoke your opponent to yell, so that you automatically win the discussion.

Rules in Norway:Don't stress , Don't speak German and think everyone speaks it!, Don't treat nature as a toilet or trash in, Treat nature with care and , when hiking, read our mountain rules!, treat the weather like it is and not what date it is! And some more...BTW: Rescue Teams try to rescue you, but if the weather says No, they don't come even in summer. Wear Hiking boots when hiking !
