Portugal is famous for stunning coastlines, historic cities, and some of the best food in Europe — but what is it really like to experience it as foreigners?
In this video, we share our first impressions of Portugal, from wandering the colorful streets of Lisbon to tasting iconic foods like pastel de nata and sipping port wine in Porto. Along the way, we talk about unexpected culture shocks, daily life differences, and the little things that surprised us the most as a German and American traveling through Portugal.

My wife and I moved to Braga from the US less than a year ago. We're studying Portuguese. Yes, you can find plenty of people who can speak at least some English--enough to get by. But we want to be "bons cidadãos" of Portugal, so we're working hard on the language. Our ability to hold even simple conversations in Portuguese has really surprised a lot of locals, and they treat us better. They treat American visitors just fine--these are some of the least rude people I've met--but when we speak to them in their own language, they stop being "just polite" and seem really happy that we're at least meeting them halfway. (Even if we still mispronounce some words and get the occasional irregular verb wrong.)
tuk tuk não contam, não são carros para pessoas, são só um esquema para turistas...
Love the "Al Capone" electric cars! Just like in the old days 😊
Really looks picturesque in all the places you visited. Wish I was well enough to travel, I would definitely go and check Portugal out. They have some yummy food, always feel like that is always at the top of my list, really believe it’s an expression of love. Thank you Deana and Phil for sharing your trip, and the delicious food, always appreciated! 🥘🐠💕👍
Fantastic video!! Thanks so much.😊🇺🇲
you got 20 euro dishes because you went to tourist restaurants, in a place we call "tasca" you can eat the best dishes, like "bitoque", for under 10 euros
